Tecplot Add-on: Key Frame Animation

This user-contributed add-on is unsupported. Please use forums for questions and comments.

(Please let jim know if you have an add-on you'd like to share or link to.)

This add-on makes Key Frame (where the viewer's orientation changes) animation very, very easy. It leverages functionality built into the Tecplot 360 2008 R2 and Tecplot Focus 2008 R2 products.
  • Written by: Ben Medina-Orton
  • Compatible with: Tecplot 360/Focus 2008 Release 2 (only)
  • Known Limitations:
    1. Works only with Tecplot 360/Focus release 2 (September 2008)
    2. Output formats are limited to AVI, Flash and Raster Metafile
  • Instructions:
    1. Download the appropriate archive file below
    2. Extract its contents.
    3. Windows users: copy the .dll into your $TEC_360_2008/bin or $TEC_FOCUS_2008/bin directory

Mac/Linux users: copy the .so into your $TEC_360_2008/lib or $TEC_FOCUS_2008/lib directory

    4. Edit your tecplot.add file and append this line:
      $!LoadAddon "keyframe"
    5. Start Tecplot
    Instructions:
    1. Create a layout.
    2. Go to Animate > Key Frame Animation (note that you must be in 3D Cartesian mode). The animation dialog appears:
    3. Rotate and/or zoom the plot to the initial view for the animation, then click "Add". If you want, you can change the name of the keyframe to something descriptive (e.g. "End of airfoil").
    4. Rotate and/or zoom the plot to the next keyframe of the animation, then click "Add" to add keyframes to the end of animation or "Insert" to insert a keyframe above the selected one in the list. Note that the keyframes are just snapshots of the view in Tecplot, so you should limit your rotations to < 180° between keyframes, or the animation may not rotate in the direction you expect.
    5. When you are finished adding keyframes, click "Animate All" to perform the complete animation.
    Other features:
  • Macro capability
The actions "Open Animation File" and "Animate All" are macro-ized. This is enough to perform an animation in batch mode.
  • File>Open/Save Animation file
Save your animation to a file and re-open it later.
  • Options Menu
    • Animate Time Concurrently
With this option enabled, time animation will be performed concurrently with the keyframe animation.
    • Time Animation Options
      Selecting this launches this dialog

      The options are as follows:
      • Forward: Performs a single animation of time from beginning to end.
      • Loop: Loops through time the specified number of cycles.
      • Bounce: Loops forward then backward through time the specified number of cycles.
      • As Captured: As you capture keyframes, the current solution time in Tecplot is also recorded. This option will interpolate through the captured times during the animation
    • Animate Streamtraces Concurrently
When this option is enabled, streamtrace markers/dashes will be animated concurrently with the keyframe animation
    • Fade In/Out
When this option is enabled, the light intensity and background light will be faded during the start and/or end of the animation. The fade will last the lesser of 30 frames or 10 percent of all frames. The 3D Orientation axis will be disabled, as it does not participate in lighting. Note that this option works best with a black background and without any plot features that do not participate in lighting (i.e. mesh lines, edge lines, etc.)
  • Update
Update the selected view in the list with the current view in Tecplot. This also re-captures the current solution time in Tecplot.
  • Apply
Apply the selected view as the current view in Tecplot.
  • Delete
Delete the selected keyframe from the list.
  • Clear
Delete all keyframes from the list.
  • View Name
Provide a descriptive name for the selected view in the list.
  • Frame Count
Set the number of frames between the selected view and the next view in the animation.
  • Destination
Animate on screen or to file.
  • Animate All
Animates through all keyframes in the list.
  • Animate Selected
Animates only the selected views in the list. This allows you to easily refine a subset of the animation without performing the complete animation.
